Truly Awesome
Rev. Patrick Harrison
The Genesis chapter three account of the fall of man is, in my opinion, the perfect picture of an Awesome God.
We pick up the story with Adam and Eve hiding themselves as they hear God in the garden. The Lord asks, "Adam, where are you?" Adam replies, "I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid myself". God asked Adam who had told him he was naked and if he had eaten of the tree he was told not to eat. Adam says yes but then immediately blames the woman that God had given him! And mankind has since passed blame, not wanting to face up to his responsibility. The woman in turn blames the serpent God had created. And the final result of this one act of self will is that all of them suffer separate curses from God.
God through his questioning of Adam gave him every chance to come clean and admit his disobedience; Adam's fall is great and it became our fall as well. We missed the pleasure of communion with our Heavenly Father, the mystery of living without death, sickness, persecution, trial, tribulation, evil doings, sin, and so forth.
How we can praise Almighty God that from His infinite mind before the foundations of the world was the redemption of mankind already planned? Mankind would be restored! In Genesis 3:15, God utters some of the most profound words ever recorded, "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel."(NAS)
God put into action, by this prophetic statement, the sacrifice of the Perfect, Unblemished Lamb who was to be born of the seed of woman, live a life free from sin, suffer agony, and be crucified, be buried and rise from the dead in victory over death, hell and the grave. What a God, who would love us this much to restore us to fellowship He once had with man.
"Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. The Lord said, I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds in the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them. But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord."
(Genesis 6:5-8, NAS)The disobedience of Adam brought sin into the world and over the years had brought mankind into such degradation of evil continually that God had enough and was sorry that He had made man and animals, creeping things and birds. Imagine, if possible the horrific condition of mankind to bring God to such a decision. BUT NOAH!!!
I certainly do not want to presume upon God. He had reached a decision to destroy all flesh from the earth. Enough was enough, God was sorry He had made them. Think about this! How thankful we can be Noah found favor. He was a righteous man, blameless in his time and he walked with God. This one man made it possible for you and I to be alive today. What an Awesome God!!
After the flood, God established a covenant with Noah. Water would never again be used to destroy all flesh. The sign of a bow in the sky would be God’s reminder that the covenant was sealed. Mankind once again had opportunity to live and to find life eternally. God’s plan could go forward. What an awesome God!!
Jesus was born, lived sinlessly, ministered, taught the Kingdom of God, setting the example for us to follow, was falsely accused, then executed. In so doing, the redemption price was satisfied, the way to God and eternal fellowship was restored. I Timothy 1:15 tells us that Jesus came to save sinners, that this is a statement to be trusted and accepted. God’s plan is still going forward. What an awesome God!!
Despite all of Satan’s devices, all of man’s perverted ways and teachings against God, the preaching of another gospel(s), the plan of God continues. "For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect-if that were possible" (Mark 13:22, NAS). Jesus alerts us that not everyone who professes Him is a true believer. He tells us that there will be ministers with the appearance of righteousness, who would appear sincere in their concern for the work of God’s kingdom, and appear to be interested in the lost finding salvation in Christ. They might even perform miracles and have large crowds follow them.
Take these type ministers into their private lives and you see them overcome with greed and self-indulgence, that they are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean, full of hypocrisy and wickedness. (Matt 23:25-28) Throughout the gospels Jesus told his disciples to watch out for those who would lead astray. (Matt 7:15; 16:6,11; 24:4,24; Mark 4:24; 8:15; 12:38-40; 13:5; Luke 12:1; 17:23; 20:46; 21:8). And in Isaiah 55:11 God declares that His word from his mouth would not return to Him empty, that it would accomplish what God intended. God’s word brings life to those who accept, and condemns those who reject it.
Even though there are numerous false teachers leading many away from Biblical truth, we must remain ever faithful speaking the truth in love (Eph. 4:15). And as the true Church of Jesus Christ becomes smaller and smaller we can not lose heart, but stand firm and when we have done all to stand, stand. The plan and purpose of God’s word will come to pass. What an Awesome God!!
Through the ages of time, there has been no and never will be a failure in God’s plan being fulfilled. We eagerly look forward to going home. We need not wonder what the end of those who love and practice falsehoods shall be for Rev. 22:15 gives the answer. Rev. 22:12-14 - "Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. (NAS)
The future for the true believer is beyond our comprehension where Heaven is concerned and the joy that awaits us can not even be imagined. What God has planned for us after we vacate this earthly shell and this mortal puts on immortality, when we see our Precious Savior face to face, it certainly will be joy unspeakable and full of glory. God’s plan fulfilled. WHAT AN AWESOME GOD!
